REUTERS - O Google anunciou ter criado um software baseado na Web que funciona tanto online quanto offline, o que representa uma enorme mudança para o setor de Internet. O software permite que os usuários trabalhem em trens, aviões, locais com conexão de baixa qualidade e até mesmo em regiões muito remotas.

A tecnologia, chamada Google Gears, permite que usuários de computadores, celulares e outros aparelhos manipulem serviços de Web como email, agendas online ou leitores de notícias tanto online quanto por meio de conexões intermitentes com a Web ou completamente offline.

Ao eliminar a brecha entre os novos serviços via Web e o velho mundo de software para computadores de mesa, no qual quaisquer mudanças eram armazenadas localmente, nas máquinas de cada usuário, o Google está levando a Web a esferas de atividade completamente novas e oferecendo desafio à rival Microsoft, a líder na era do software para desktops.
"A Web é excelente, mas não funciona muito bem se a pessoa não tiver uma conexão", disse o vice-presidente de engenharia do Google, Jeff Huber, "O Gears elimina uma brecha na funcionalidade da Web."

O buscador planeja tornar a tecnologia Gears disponível gratuitamente como software de código-aberto, o que significa que outros programadoes poderão usar e aperfeiçoar o sistema em seus produtos.

O Gears promete ampliar o uso de dezenas de produtos e serviços do Google, bem como de milhares de programas de produtores independentes, ao torná-los mais acessíveis em locais e horários antes inconvenientes.

A tecnologia também permite que os criadores de software incorporem buscas e indexação de páginas da Web aos seus próprios aplicativos, segundo Huber.

Muitos desses produtos serão capazes de realizar buscas limitadas offline, já que, quando conectados, terão baixado dados automaticamente. As funções plenas de busca do Google voltam a estar disponíveis quando o usuário retomar a conexão com a Internet.

Os primeiros parceiros a usar o Gears, de acordo com o Google, incluem a líder no software para design Adobe Systems, a Opera, da Noruega, produtora de um browser popular para celulares; e a Mozilla, que desenvolve o browser Firefox, a mais séria alternativa ao Internet Explorer, da Microsoft.
