Portal EXAME - O que significa esse prêmio de Melhores e Maiores para o UOL?
Marcelo Epstejn - É o reconhecimento de todo o trabalho do UOL, do pioneirismo em relação ao desenvolvimento da internet no Brasil. O UOL vem desenvolvendo ao longo de todos esses anos não só um conteúdo de qualidade mas toda uma confiabilidade em relação aos serviços que presta aos internautas do país.
Portal EXAME - Por que o UOL é a empresa brasileira com maior audiência na internet do país?
Epstejn - É uma combinação de tudo. Da força da marca e da credibilidade que o nome UOL tem suportado por todos os seus serviços, desde o atendimento a clientes até suas equipes de desenvolvimento em tecnologia, passando, claro, pelo conteúdo. Isso fez com que o UOL fosse se firmando cada vez mais no mercado de internet brasileira.
Portal EXAME - Qual é a importância do conteúdo jornalístico para uma empresa como o UOL? Ele se diferencia bastante de outros veículos de jornalismo impresso, não?
Epstejn - É outra dinâmica. O jornalismo online tem características próprias. Há uma diversidade de informação na qual você precisa realmente não só captar o que está acontecendo mas também gerar um conteúdo de uma forma rápida, dinâmica e também com credibilidade. Não é simplesmente copiar e colar o que está sendo divulgado pelo mercado. É por isso que o UOL investe muito na geração de conteúdo próprio. Temos uma equipe de mais de 100 profissionais dedicados à geração de conteúdo próprio. Mas é claro que procuramos também ter sempre parcerias com conteúdo de terceiros que sejam relevantes. Portal EXAME - Quais os principais produtos hoje do UOL levando em consideração a audiência e o mercado publicitário?
Epstejn - Nós temos uma plataforma bem diversificada de produtos voltados ao mercado publicitário. No UOL, nós temos uma plataforma completa de comércio eletrônico que vai desde um site de comparação de preços, o Shopping UOL, até um market place, o Toda Oferta, passando por uma ferramenta de compra segura na internet, o Pag Seguro. Temos links patrocinados e a segmentação permitida por nossas estações. O UOL hoje tem um número de mais de 25 estações com mais de 1 milhão de visitantes únicos. Então nós temos uma audiência muito grande e diversificada que permite ao anunciante fazer uma cobertura tanto de massa quanto segmentada, mas sempre com grandes audiências.
Portal EXAME - Informações divulgadas pelo mercado apontam que o UOL tem um terço de toda a verba publicitária da internet brasileira. Isso é verdade? Ao que pode ser atribuída essa preferência dos anunciantes pelo UOL?
Epstejn - Em relação a esse valor, não existe um dado oficial sobre a participação de mercado. As empresas não abrem seus números. O que eu posso dizer é que o UOL tem uma participação muito interessante em virtude da qualidade do seu conteúdo e da sua audiência. Como eu disse, o UOL, ao longo dos anos, criou essa imagem e com os investimentos que fez conseguiu fidelizar essa audiência e atraí-la cada vez mais. Essa audiência tem um valor muito grande para os anunciantes e, com isso, nós temos de um lado a audiência qualificada e de outro lado nós temos uma diversidade de plataformas não só para ações de vendas mas para e-commerce e branding. Nós temos várias ferramentas, inclusive, entre as mais recentes está o UOL Celular, onde nós também já temos plataformas de publicidade online. É possível, por exemplo, visualizar um anúncio no celular e responder àquela oferta diretamente. Há ainda outras ferramentas como o buscador de preços, o Shopping UOL. Todas as funcionalidades possíveis nós estamos migrando para o celular.
Portal EXAME - O fato de o UOL fazer parte do grupo Folha atrai anunciantes de alguma maneira?
Epstejn - Eu acho que não. As empresas há um bom tempo já têm uma independência. São duas empresas que andam por si só.
Portal EXAME - Por que os concorrentes do UOL não conseguem ter o mesmo sucesso no mercado publicitário?
Epstejn - Eu não sei falar das outras empresas. Posso falar do UOL. A gente sempre consegue atrair novos internautas para a audiência do UOL não só para consumir os produtos mas para navegar no portal. Nós temos de um lado a audiência e do outro as plataformas bastante diversificadas. Isso é tudo que o cliente procura: audiência qualificada e formas diferenciadas de anúncio.
Portal EXAME - O problema é que a quantidade do dinheiro dos anunciantes que vai para a internet é pequena. Pouco mais de 3% do bolo publicitário brasileiro vai para os sites, certo?
Epstejn - Neste ano acho que o bolo publicitário da internet vai crescer para 4 ou 4,5% do total. No Reino Unido, por exemplo, chega a 11%. Então estamos fazendo um trabalho junto aos anunciantes para mostrar que eles estão perdendo a oportunidade de aumentar sua presença junto a 64 milhões de internautas brasileiros. A internet no Brasil já não é mais um veículo de nicho. E o UOL oferece tanto canais segmentados como páginas voltadas para a massa.
Portal EXAME - Os anúncios já são a principal fonte de receitas para o UOL?
Epstejn - Hoje acho que a proporção de nossas receitas é de 40% para anúncios e de 60% para provedor de internet e outros serviços. Mas a cada ano essa proporção fica mais equilibrada porque a parcela de anúncios sempre cresce forte e a do serviço de provedor tem uma leve alta ou fica estagnada.
Portal EXAME - É verdade que a crise fez muitas empresas anunciarem mais na internet porque é mais barato do que em outras mídias?
Epstejn - Nós não fomos beneficiados pela crise. As receitas com publicidade cresceram mais de 40% no ano passado e estão crescendo pouco mais de 20% neste ano. Essa diferença é efeito da crise, que tornou os anunciantes mais cautelosos. Então eu torço para que o mercado melhore mesmo como se espera.
Portal EXAME - Os investidores estranham que o UOL fez sua oferta inicial de ações (IPO) na qual captou um grande volume de recursos que nunca foram utilizados em investimentos. Dizem que há 600 milhões no caixa do UOL. O que a empresa planeja fazer com esse dinheiro?
Epstejn - Esse "não investir" é relativo. O UOL lançou mais de 12 novos produtos nos últimos anos, desde o Shopping UOL até ferramentas completas como o Pag Seguro. Então o UOL vem investindo tanto que ele diversificou bem suas fontes de receitas e produtos, sempre ligadas à internet, e ultimamente a gente tem feito algum crescimento na área de hosting, por exemplo, onde o UOL fez algumas aquisições. Então, o UOL tem, na verdade, uma análise bem consciente do que pode fazer em termos de investimentos, de escolha em que investir e como investir. Logo que fizemos o IPO, percebemos que todas as aquisições que nos interessavam estavam caras e que podíamos desenvolver as mesmas ferramentas com nossa excelente equipe de tecnologia, com um custo mais baixo. Talvez fosse mais perceptível se fizéssemos diversas aquisições, mas o fato é que estamos sempre investindo. E o caixa continua alto porque estamos sempre gerando mais caixa.
Portal EXAME - O boato de que o UOL poderia usar o dinheiro do caixa para recomprar as próprias ações e fechar capital é recorrente. Existe algum plano nesse sentido?
Epstejn - Não há nada nesse sentido, são apenas especulações.
Portal EXAME - Você já ouviu esse boato do fechamento de capital?
Epstejn - Isso aí eu já ouvi umas 20 vezes.
Portal EXAME - O fato de os controladores do UOL terem recentemente recomprado pequenas quantidades de ações em mercado alimenta esses boatos?
Epstejn - Não. Isso foi feito para investimento. O controlador avaliou que os preços estavam depreciados e aproveitou.
O UOL é o terceiro maior portal do Brasil em número de visitantes, de acordo com levantamento do Ibope/NetRatings. A empresa fica atrás apenas de dois gigantes da internet mundial: o Google (incluindo sites como o Orkut e o YouTube) e a Microsoft (que inclui o MSN Messenger). Em publicidade, o UOL se destaca ainda mais. O mercado estima que a empresa fique com cerca de um terço de toda a receita com anúncios em sites brasileiros. Por esse motivo, o UOL foi escolhido a melhor empresa da Indústria Digital pelo anuário Melhores e Maiores 2009, da revista EXAME.
O diretor-geral do UOL, Marcelo Epstejn, acredita que a publicidade na internet ainda tem muito espaço para crescer no Brasil. Segundo ele, os sites brasileiros devem ficar com 4% a 4,5% de todo o bolo publicitário neste ano - contra um índice de 11% no Reino Unido.
