O peso de ser Google: entrevista com Vint Cerf

Conhecido como o “pai da internet” pela sua participação na criação do TCP/IP, o protocolo que é a base da rede, o vice-presidente do Google, Vint Cerf, se preocupa com o crescimento saudável do filho.

– Devemos alertar as pessoas de que, se elas abusarem (da web), haverá consequências – comentou em entrevista concedida ao Correio Braziliense durante sua mais recente viagem ao Brasil, na qual falou sobre o que pensa da internet atual e dos novos projetos da companhia, como o Wave, além de fazer o que mais sabe: previsões para o futuro da web.

Pergunta – O Google tem 64% das buscas feitas na internet. Mas a concorrência começa a mostrar novidades. Há lugar para muitos competidores nesse setor?

Vint Cerf – Acho que sim. Na verdade, isso é bom para o usuário, significa que há competição constante para lhe proporcionar os melhores serviços. Vemos isso como motivação para oferecermos mais pesquisas de qualidade. E acredito que a razão pela qual as pessoas são atraídas para o Google é que nossa ferramenta faz um trabalho melhor, dirigindo-as para as informações que elas procuram.

Pergunta – O que o senhor achou do Bing, a nova investida da Microsoft no setor de buscas?

Cerf – Acho que eles reconheceram o valor do serviço de buscas e entendo a motivação de tentar entrar nesse setor. A verdadeira questão é como o usuário vai reagir ao serviço. Se ele se tornar efetivo para um grupo significativo de pessoas, elas vão usá-lo. Sabemos a importância de construir ferramentas de busca que sejam efetivas ao usuário.

Pergunta – Quais as expectativas em relação ao Wave, considerado o e-mail do futuro?

Cerf – O Wave é uma dramática integração de diferentes maneiras de se comunicar. Acreditamos que será poderoso para a colaboração, além de eliminar a separação entre mensagem instantânea, e-mail, blog e outros meios de interação. Hoje, usamos várias aplicações para fazer diferentes coisas e o Wave diz: “Bem, estou pensando em juntar tudo isso”.

Pergunta – O Google Chrome atingiu as expectativas?

Cerf – O Chrome é muito popular porque é código aberto. Outras pessoas podem acrescentar novas ideias. Isso é parte da filosofia do Google. Não achamos que toda a criatividade do mundo está no Google. Ela está em todos os lugares. Queremos tornar possível para as pessoas contribuírem com suas ideias. Esperamos que o Chrome também aprimore a segurança no uso da internet, porque o browser é a ponte pela qual vírus e worms chegam ao PC. O Chrome tenta se defender mais fortemente do que quaisquer outros navegadores. Ainda não tive muita chance de usá-lo, porque não há versão para Macintosh – e sou um usuário do Mac. Fico cobrando toda semana: cadê minha versão para Mac?

Pergunta – Que novidades da internet chamam a sua atenção?

Cerf – As coisas mais excitantes são os celulares, que se tornaram parte do ambiente da internet. A segunda são as ferramentas. Estão se tornando parte da rede e, quando isso acontece, também se tornam parte de nosso ambiente de informação. É algo extremamente rico, e há muito mais coisas chegando.

Pergunta – O que senhor acha da febre de redes sociais?

Cerf – Acho muito ruim o fato de você entrar no Orkut e não poder se comunicar com alguém que esteja em outra rede social. Estão todos separados. O Wave é uma tentativa de tornar as coisas mais próximas.
