Alexandre Hohagen: Google não é a Microsoft

O Google acaba de tornar oficial a operação brasileira. Mas mesmo longe do país, o Google ostenta dados de fazer inveja para quem já está há anos operando por aqui: é a ferramenta de busca número 1 do Brasil, gerando 71% de todas as páginas de resultado no áis, segundo o comScore Media Metrix; o crescimento anual de usuários do Google no Brasil foi de 56%, enquanto o crescimento ttoal de usuários da internet no Brasil foi de 15%; e mais da metade do Google atualmente têm origem fora dos Estados Unidos, o que torna vital as operações fora do território norte-americano.

Nesta entrevista, o diretor-geral do Google Brasil, dá sua visão da operação local.

IDG Now!: Qual o foco da operação do Google Brasil?
Alexandre Hohagen: Podemos dividir em dois: o primeiro é trazer para o Brasil os produtos que julgamos terão sucesso aqui; o segundo é educar o mercado para a ferramenta de AdWords, de buscas pagas.

IDG Now!: Qual o tamanho da estrutura que está sendo montada?
Hohagen: No Brasil, temos duas. Uma localizada em Belo Horizonte, que é a estrutura de engenharia e desenvolvimento (nota: o Google comprou a mineira Akwan em julho deste ano). E a outra é operação de negócios, que está sendo tocado por mim, que está com 20 funcionários.

IDG Now!: Como a Akwan, que foi comprado pelo Google Brasil, vai ajudar nesta estratégia?
Hohagen: A Akwan foi adquirida em função do potencial tecnológico e humano. Então, queremos aproveitar este conhecimento para ajudar na localização de produtos do Google e para o desenvolvimento de alguns produtos que achamos relevantes para o Brasil.

IDG Now!: A Akwan tem parceria com diversos portais da web brasileira. Os acordos serão mantidos?
Hohagen: Neste momento, estamos avaliando cada um destes e vamos ter que identificar o que vale ou não manter.

IDG Now!: O sr. considera o Google concorrente da mídia tradicionais?
Hohagen: O Google é na verdade uma empresa criada para ajudar a organizar a sua vida. Não queremos competir, em nenhum momento, com a mídia tradicional. O que vai acontecer, em um primeiro momento, é que nos investimentos de mídia de uma empresa, além de TV, rádio e jornal, ela vai começar a levar em consideração o mix de links patrocinados. O Google não tem a menor vocação de ser um provedor de acesso ou uma empresa de conteúdo. o 'core business' é ajudar a organizar todas as informações da internet e oferecer isso ao usuário.

IDG Now!: Quem o sr. considera os principais concorrentes do Google no Brasil?
Hohagen: O Yahoo com o Overture, com as operações de busca e links patrocinados. Vemos o UOL e os outros portais como parceiros.

IDG Now!: Bill Gates disse, recentemente, que o Google é mais parecido com a Microsoft "do que qualquer outra empresa que competimos". O sr. concorda?
Hohagen: Não concordo. Estamos bem longe de ser a Microsoft. De novo, o nosso negócio não é empacotar software, é organizar as informações para o usuário. Um produto como o Google desktop a organizar a sua vida e seu computador. Ele não é vendido como software.

IDG Now!: Há planos de lançar o Google News no Brasil?
Hohagen: Existem planos de lançar o Google News e os outros produtos do Google no Brasil. A questão é entender a necessidade de mercado para determinar essas prioridades e começar a fazer. A operação é muito recente, mas já lançamos o Google Toolbar, o Picasa (software de gerenciamento de fotos) e o Gmail (e-mail gratuito) em português.
